What hardwood species has the most versatility as far as interior design is concerned?

I am trying to decide what species (and color) of hardwood flooring to install in my house and I don't want to buy something now that will look horrible with the whatever colors or design that I want my walls to be 10 years from now.

What hardwood species has the most versatility as far as interior design is concerned?
I love the look of Maple.

It has a nice creamy color with beautiful light brown grain. It's also very durable and not as common as oak.
Reply:Oak or some other light color wood.

That way if the room is too bright, you can paint the walls a darker color. But if you put a dark wood on the floor, you are stuck with a dark room.
Reply:oak floors are the most common, you may buy unfinished and stain whatever color you want or buy a prefinished floor with a variety of colors and patterns..or leave it natural and just put about 3 coats of polyurethane on it...good luck
Reply:maple or golden oak
