How do you charge for a CD cover design?

I've been offered a job to design a CD cover for an upcoming artiste but I have no idea how to charge for it. Is it one rate or do I get more since it's being massed produced?

Usually, when you get an assignment like this, you are under a "work for hire" contract. That is, the work you create becomes the property of the buyer.

Unless you are especially in demand for producing this kind of work, you will not be able to negotiate a royalty for large sales of the CD.

So, the amount you charge will be the only money you will get for this work. How to charge? It's usually a flat fee (not hourly), and it's based upon your experience, and quality of work. For an "upcoming" artist, the fee could range anywhere from $100 to $500.

If that seems too low to you, realize that if your work is really good, you can use this work as a sample to get other, similar, work at a higher price.
