How easy is it to find a design job in California before moving out there?

I want to move to California (San Diego or San Francisco/surrounding) but I dont want to move out there without a job. How easy is it to find a design job in California when right now I am living in Chicago, and are out of state applicants automatically tossed to the bottom of the pile?

If you have experience, and education then put together a resume and portfolio and submit them to design companies in the areas you want to move to. You might mention in your cover letter you plan on relocating to California. Before you do this I would make sure you have some money saved, $6000.00 to $10,000 at least and be ready to move on a moments notice if you get a job offer.

Keep and eye here http://www.apartmentratings.com/ for apartments, whats good, whats bad and whats available so you are not living in a motel too long once you get here.

I would guess if you have the talent they are looking for they would hire you as long as you were willing to move at your own expense.
Reply:Post a link to your resume here and post it on the major job websites. Look at Craigslist (San Francisco) for the best local SF job listings. I know of current opportunities for CAD operators. Your assumption that out of state applicants are tossed to the bottom of the pile is false. Employers do however, want to guarantee that an extended offer will be accepted. Your statement that "I want to move to California" is a good indication that you are an acceptable candidate for a SF or San Diego location. If your Job Objective on the first line of your resume is moving to California, I cannot image that anyone would place that at the bottom of a pile.
