Im a student currently studying graphic design, and in my 2nd year now. I believe i have really great ideas to present.I want to eventually end up in the magazing industry, designing layouts and all. At the moment im studying part time and working part time, but my job doesnt involve designing at all. (im a shoe salesperson!!) I want to begin already, as a designer but im totally lost as where to start for now until i have the diploma in my hands. Can anyone suggest what i can try?
thanks guys! Any advice would be really apreciated.
How can i put my foot into the graphic design industry?
Your school should have a job placement service. Check with them. They may be able to match you with a job related to your interest, but you probably won't get a job as a designer. It will be as a mail clerk, office assistant, etc. But it's still a foot in the door and gets you known to the company. Then they'll be more like to hire you as a designer upon graduation.
Reply:I am in the same position as you are. You need to have a very good portfolio, Talk to your adviser at college and try to get an internship or a paid internship. Although you won't be making a lot of money you will have your foot in the door and get experience. All graphic design firms and jobs require 2-4 years experience. A diploma alone will not get you a job in this field, look in the classified section of the news paper and see if anyone is hiring in the graphic design field and offer to do some kind of internship. Or see if your adviser knows of anything available.
