How do you get a job/training in weapon design?

My fiance is in the Army. He wants to get a job in weapon designing and testing. What kind of education or training can you get, and how do you get the job. He wants to actually design the weapon (drawings and all) and then possibly test the end result. This is only for serious answers please.

How do you get a job/training in weapon design?
He needs a strong back ground in Mechanical and design engineering.I suggest at the least a BA in one of these fields,and preferable a masters.After he gets his degree he can start looking for a position in the field he wants.He should go on line and check out fire arm manufacturers,and put out some feelers.Mechanical and design engineering covers a wide scope of things.
