With a degree in graphic design, can you work for a company to design fashion or accessories?

Would a graphic design degree be good enough to work as an electronic designer in the fashion or accessory (such as Claires) industry?

I was in the industry. I was working doing graphic design for a children's fashion company. They actually hire graphic designers but not to design.. they make graphics (art) that go on designs. They can also have them make patterns if they learn the program. Once you have been working there a while it isn't impossible to work your way into a design position instead of an art (graphic design) position. It would be easier to get a degree in fashion design though.

If you already have a graphics degree at least take a few fashion design classes on accessories specifically. The point of the design classes is to understand the process of how things are constructed. You need to know about the machines and materials you use. An examples is like when they make sweaters. You need to know how the machines knit or else you can make a design that looks nice but is impossible to make and you wouldn't know how to adjust it to be cost efficient. You would also learn fashion terms and the programs they use.

Then make a resume. one for design and one for art. If they hire you for art then it would be a lot easier to move into design with those classes behind you. If you get an art job first with your graphic design degree, you also might be able to find a company that will pay your fashion design classes.
Reply:a degree... just tells your employers you know how to learn.. however you might want to take a few classes in the other fields after your done! All I have to request is... you need need need to have internships and jobs in this field this is all that is important! I am a graphic designer and I know this for a fact!
Reply:Not necessarily. As a graphic designer, you would probably have a good eye for fashion design. But there are other skills involved. You need to learn about construction and materials. You may not need to get a full fashion degree, but certainly take some classes to fill that gaps.
