Where can I find a good design tool for a tiny 3/4 bathroom?

I have a 3/4 bathroom that I have gutted to the studs that only measures 3 1/2' x 8' and would like to get ideas on how to design and decorate it.

Where can I find a good design tool for a tiny 3/4 bathroom?
Depends on what's going back in that bathroom - shower, toilet, sink, or just toilet and sink ? If you are doing the remodel yourself, electrical and plumbing will be your biggest hits if you move things around from their original location. To get started, go to your local home improvement store ( Lowes', Home Depot, etc...) and look at items you intend to use. Then go to the manufacturers website, and get the installation guide for each item. This will give you item footprint dimensions, and show any special things you need to consider when installing ( clearances). Once you have that, and want to play with layout - get a sheet of 1/2" foam insulation board ( with the foil covering) and cut out the shapes of the items you will be installing. Then you can move these around in the room and see what plays well and what doesn't. Pay attention to the location of windows and heights of windows when placing fixtures and cabinets.

I did a master bath remodel last year and was quoted $29,000. I did it myself ( with help of local trades that I engaged for plumbing, tile and electrical) for around $17,000. I got a better design than the remodeler was offering and for a lower price. It took me 4 months from start to finish, including time I spent waiting on the trades to show up and do their work. Using the foam templates helped me spot tight spots and fine tune the design prior to committing the layout to the trades for installation. As a result we didn't have to re-do anything, it fit perfect the first time, and it looks great.
Reply:We're big fans of online sources and use thisoldhouse.com and diynetwork.com a great deal. The This Old House link below has articles dealing with how to design small baths so they feel roomier and big help for small baths, to name just a few. At the diynetwork site, if you key in small bathrooms in the search engine, you'll fine a number of programs that feature small bathrooms and will probably get a lot of good ideas there. Good luck.
Reply:I would recommend taking a scaled sketch to a local home improvement center either a big box store or a local lumber yard and see if they will help you design it. Of course you should also consider purchasing from them as part of the deal. If you want to do it yourself, I would suggest not contacting contractors as they are likely to charge for their assistance if you do not accept their bid.
Reply:I just gutted and redone my bathroom that is not much bigger. I put paneling on the lower half of the walls, painted the upper half, installed a smaller sink/vanity, installed just shower, put in extra light (exhaust fan with light, and light fixture above sink). This really made my bathroom look alot different and bigger. I have before and after photos if you are interested.

What is the Best Way to Design Overhead Transparencies?

I have a speech class and I need a way to design overhead transparencies so that they will look professional.

What is the Best Way to Design Overhead Transparencies?
1.Buy the plastic sheets and use your computer to print out your speech point

2. Go to Kinko's and take your printed speech points and print them on transparencies.

3. With a fine felt tip permanent marker write it all out ahead of time very neatly and legibly.
Reply:You should probably try to find a way that you can design the transparencies on a computer; however, you will need to purchase special transparencies that can be used in a printer. You can purchase these is any office supply store.

Make sure that you use a bold font or write very dark- it will be easier to read. Also, do not try to put too much information on one slide. Try to keep a lot of "white space" on the transparency. White space will make the reader less frustrated while he or she is trying to read the transparency. Also, write large so everyone in the back can read, too :)
Reply:You could make a design on a computer program (Word, Power Point, etc...) and then print it out on paper. Then you can actually copy the design onto the transperency by putting the transperacy paper in a copier machine and copying the design. It works great (But I have only tried it in a big company kind of copier machine) Don't know if it would work on a home copier machine. Get the transpericies from the store that are backed with paper that peels off.
Reply:You can design them on Microsoft works, or word, then print them off using your printer. That's what I do.
Reply:Keep them simple, not too many words or graphics to a page. What I like to do is design them on the computer and then print them off, then display them against the whiteboard rather than a screen, so if I have anything to add I can just write it on the board without messing up my transparency.

What to charge for restaurant menu design?

I've been asked to design a menu for a local restaurant and I need to know what to charge. I've thought about letting him pay in gift certificates since he's just starting out, but again, how much is fair? I figure it will take me about 5 hours to complete with occational updates.

Thanks!

What to charge for restaurant menu design?
A barter using gift certificates for his resturant is a great idea. Tell him that you will charge him $x per hour in cash or he can pay you $X (10% or 15% more than the cash) is gift certificates. Sometimes you have to do stuff like this to help the startups and it all works out in the end.

How to know which online interior design courses that are reliable?

I am looking for a reliable school to enrol in a home interior design course. To study online a few hours a day and to finish the course in 1 to 1 1/2 years.

How to know which online interior design courses that are reliable?
i would go to the local home improvement such as the home depot or Lowe's and ask them because most have been where you want to go.
Reply:PCDH and The Art Institute of Phoenix
Reply:I go to Art Institute Online (aii.com) and it is definitly teaching me alot. Two years for a Bachelor's degree in Interior Design. What makes me believe that they are real (you know what I mean) is because you can go to their campus (they have em all over) or go online so it's not like some online scam. I think the cost for ID was like 75K if I am not mistaken, I could be way off. Go check em out.
Reply:I took an Interior Design Course thru the mail...it was thru Stratford Institute...i have the address...either IM me or email me and I'll give it to ya...the school consists of 12 homework assignments that you mail in and they mail you back the grades...i can't remember exactly how much it costs but they give you the books and everything you need to finish the course...i finished mine in under 3 months
Reply:none will ever get you a job in interior design, if you dont go to a real university and take interior design you may as well forget it.

How did you get into the design industry?

To any designers: How did you get your first design job and how did you get past the "2 years experience" barrier?

How did you get into the design industry?
Sometimes you have to start at the bottom and work your way up. 2 years designing forms and flyers in a small print shop or newspaper with a good reputation is a small price to pay for a good leg up the career ladder.

Reply:to get a job in design, first you need a degree, higher the better at any design course- graphic design, architcteture, automotive.....

experience is everything and good experience means better prospect. it can be difficult to get a job without experince but a 1st degree at a top design university can be good. Some companies find it difficult to employ graduates your skill is limited and they are unwilling to pay you. but to get by this you can voluntarily work for free whilst getting that experience and help to develope which goes onto your cv to give you the necessary way into a top job.

Reply:I'm a professional Illustrator so can't answer your question directly. However, here are some ideas:

1. Contacts. I produce a weekly illustration and have done for the last 2 and a half years. I got this job through a good friend. I've just got my first professional web design project through my brother in law.

2. Freebies. Ok, possibly soul destroying but this is good to make contacts and build up your portfolio. Why mention it was free?

3. Why not try approaching design companies directly? Lots of people do this (not just Graphic Designers) I would ask them if they can give you any work experience. You never know, they may keep you on.

Hope this is helpful and good luck!!!

Where can I advertise my Graphic Design Company in the Internet?

If it's for free much better. I do all kind of Graphic Design in English and Spanish. I also do translations.

Where can I advertise my Graphic Design Company in the Internet?
Ok it's not free but it's really cheap, try http://www.ifreelance.com it's a site where they help you meet clients. You put up a profile and you can link it to your website if you want. You bid on jobs and it's a good place to get started. There are other sites like it out there, do a search for graphic design freelance and see what you get. Also check out Google Advertising at http://www.google.com/intl/en/ads/ and Yahoo Search Marketing at http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com/?cmp=Ya... Not sure if those are free but if you want to make money you have to be willing to put in some money. If you are starting up a business and you get your business registered, these will all be tax write offs :) Good Luck!!!!

What's the best way to do a graphic design resume?

I am applying for a new job in the graphic design field. Is it best to do a 'design piece' for my resume to show creativity, or just a plain white professional/standard resume? In college i was taught to keep it professional, but yet show creativity, so that is what i am leaning towards, but when i look at examples online, they all show black %26amp; white. I am going to export a PDF, %26amp; put one or two pages of portfolio work at the end aslo.

What's the best way to do a graphic design resume?
depends on if you have experience as a graphic designer or not. if recentlly out of school there is not much one can include except class submitted work and/or work you've done on your own. that's great if you have a working portfolio even if a small one and you can always ask if they'd like to see it in addition to a traditional resume. if you've been working as a graphic arts professional already then you should pick the best of the best and do just as you said - include in pdf towards end of resume - assuming you're submitting it online.

obviously whatever you turn in should have some original creative thought behind it, especially due to the industry.

but do not try and over do it b/c it's always best to say more with less and a graphic design position will be more about what you can do software/creative/initiative wise than what one has done in the past.

also depends on if one wants to work in an agency setting, or in a production setting (not very creative sometimes) or in house for a company that will rely on you to do more than just graphic design work.

good luck and feel free to shoot me a copy of it.
Reply:I agree that it has a lot to do with how much experience you have. In any case I wouldn't over do it as one might perceive as being unprofessional. Also, your portfolio should speak for itself.

Your resume shouldn't look like a "work of art".

Some tips: Use a good font, space it well and make sure you don't make spelling or grammer mistakes.

What is the best professional indemnity insurance provider and quote for a web design firm?

Im looking to purchase professional indemnity insurance for my web design firm. Who is the best provider? What is the best quote? What sort of costs should I be paying?

Also if we move into Internet consultancy will these insurances cover this?

And finally, what other insurance is required for this kind of business?

Thanks.

What is the best professional indemnity insurance provider and quote for a web design firm?
There isn't a "best" one out there. You want someone who writes inusrance in your area - that's not going to be everyone! Coverage excluding consulting should run you about $1500 a year. Consulting is EXPENSIVE. The last e-consultant I got a policy for, it was running about $3,000 a year, and he was a one man firm.

You're going to need a business policy or package policy for your general liability and contents, plus office exposure, then the professional liability, and workers comp for any employees.

You need to sit down with a local, INDEPENDENT agent, to get a variety of quotes. You'll need to update your agent, as your operations change, to be sure you're still covered.

State Farm, Allstate, Nationwide, none of these companies are going to write you if you don't have three years of prior insurance history - that's why I say an INDEPENDENT agent, instead of one of these agents.

Where can I design things without a degree?

I have a medical career, but I have a passion for mechanical and other design. I have sketch books full of great inventions and improvements to current designs for everything you can think of. I really want to see some of this stuff go to market but don't know where to start. If I see something, I can improve anything on paper. Independent investors, patent attorneys looking for artist/designers?.... any ideas?

Get your stuff patented first. Then go to the investors.

How do you sell a dress design to a dress designer?

I have a dress design, and would like to sell it to a dress designer. How do I go about doing that?

How do you sell a dress design to a dress designer?
you have to first enter you products in fashion shows to get exposure. If da dress is good you might catch the right persons attention. You have to have more that one dress you must have a collections, a website, you can even try to get you clothing in upscale boutiques on consignment
Reply:Design a dress that the designer would absolutely die for...but then again - who the hell 'sells' a dress to a dress designer. The keyword there is that they're already designers themselves...why would they buy something from you when they can design their own item?..
Reply:Designers design their own clothing lines so they would not buy a design from you.

Best thing you can do is design a line of clothes and have your own design show
Reply:Designers design their own clothing, you might be able to sell a design to a clothing manufacturer, but until you establish yourself as a designer, that would be difficult.

Your best bet is to work with a seamstress to make and sell the finished product.

Your terms, "funky" and "stylish" are very subjective, so, are quite meaningless.

Perhaps I didn't understand the question.
Reply:make it appealing, big letters, fancy writing
Reply:I think that for a student guide, I would put something simple, ( some straight lines, bright colors, etc.) . And I would also put something that's familiar to that particular school, or that part of the country. (something that the student could identify with.)

And maybe some interesting and/or useful facts, (Just to sneak in a lesson or two.)

If the guide is for a particular school, I might let the students help answer this question. they could get involved, and participate in voting on or choosing the theme or style they like the best. Good luck with your project.

How do you recreate the design at bottom of jeans?

I've managed to hem my pants and I would like to know how to recreate the original design that all jeans have on the bottom. I have tried sand paper but that doesn't work. Its hard to find a website that has this information. Thanks in advance.

Also, the whole reason why I alter my own pants is because I'm 5'5" and they don't make 28 size pants - the lowest I've seen has been 30. I am not going to spend 60$ on another pair of jeans because the ones I altered are not ruined, just need to recreate the look. I understand that NO ONE knows how, however.

How do you recreate the design at bottom of jeans?
Very lightly with a fine point knife, scissor or mat knife (mat knives work best) go around the edges. Only the edges get as little denim as possible. This should create as small ridge as you like, the rough the hem up with some goldrush colored paint which will give them a shine but a dirt scuffed look.

How do I defend intelligent design as an answer to the fine-tuning problem?

So I'm writing my philosophy term paper on intelligent design as an answer to the fine tuning problem, which is my thesis.

I know I want to include the biological aspects, adaptation, Paley's Natural Theology, and anthropic coincdence. I'm just having trouble finding these ideas in an easy to understand context. Can someone help me understand it a little bit better?

Reply:There was a good article on that in Nature last year - but it kinda took the opposite standpoint. But still worth reading. I don't remember the month - but I think it had a bee on the cover.
Reply:The rock breaks down from this process that's called erosion. Stars and galaxies form over millions of years due to the force of gravity. You don't see those giant rocks in space called asteroids "breaking down" in space because they don't have any other force acting on it except for gravity.(and possibly any other asteroid or object that might collide with it) If you take a rock from earth and put it on the moon then that rock will not break down...why is that? because there are no forces on the moon either...besides gravity....and possibly tectonic activity at one time, but not any more. Get a basic understanding of science before you start to make these judgments. Don't "fix" the science to your belief system, fix your belief system to the science.
Reply:I cant answer your question but I will say this. The reason I think intelligent design appeals to people is its simplicity. I also think this is the same reason that scientists dismiss it. I.D. is a concept that is much easier to swallow for people who spend their whole life in fear of death. If you complicate it too much they will disregard I.D. and settle for the simpler bible story. Honestly I think I.D. makes some sense but I cant disregard the evidence of evolution. I guess im somewhere in the middle. Sorry this had nothing to do with your question.
Reply:I am a believer in god, and in intellegent design. I'm not familiar with all those names you mentioned, and I could not write an eloquent paper about how to prove intellegent design. but I have a couple of basic ideas. First consider that when you have an object, that gets left to itself long enough, it will break down into it's most basic and simple form. Example, over time, a rock will turn into dust if left long enough. You cannot have that law acting at the same time as you have gallexies and stars being born all the time.

You cant get order out of nothing. yet, there are complexitys in the universe that are so incredible, we dont yet have a grasp of many of them yet. Everything is set in order.

all things prove that god lives.
Reply:Good luck. ID is, as far as I can understand it, a real mish-mosh of arm-waving that boils down to "Because that's what I prefer to believe". I'm not sure that trying to force it to fit any sort of science framework is going to be terribly productive - these Procrustean efforts usually end up being fairly painful to everyone involved. Still, if anybody can build some sort of case, it would be in philosophy - I've never failed to be impressed by the great Greek thinkers. Stoners to a man, yes, but lovely reasoning to lead you from point A to point Q with nothing technically "real" in between..

What kind of degree do you need to design the interior of jet aircraft used in commercial airlines?

I want to design the interior of aircraft, everywhere from the strategouc placment of seating, lavatories, and galleys to the passenger satisfaction of design parts... is there some kind of degree that you need to get a job doing this? What is the job called??

What kind of degree do you need to design the interior of jet aircraft used in commercial airlines?
There are two "jobs" doing this.

One, is working for the manufacturers of seats, or galleys, etc designing and developing these parts.

The other is creating what we call LOPA (Location of Passenger Amenities) drawings, which essentially tells the techs which part number seats to install, what the seat pitch is at each row, where the monuments go (galleys, lavs, etc).

Both of these jobs require an engineering degree.

*Edit*

Andy - The FAA does not make STC's, they approve them. They are created by the STC HOLDER, that would be the company that designed the part or seat, or whatever. That is the JOB that this person wants to know about.

How hard is it to get into the Wedding Planning or Interior Design feilds?

I currently have a degree in Graphic Design, but I've been considering starting a Wedding planning buisiness or becoming an Interior Designer. I plan to go back to school either way, but I don't know anyone in these fields. So I'm wondering how hard it is to get into these fields and be succesfull. I have a little experience doing both and think I'd really enjoy either one.

Thanks in advance!

How hard is it to get into the Wedding Planning or Interior Design feilds?
By Interior Design, do you mean commercial or domestic?

I'm a commercial interior designer, and generally it is not a difficult industry to enter, but you won't get far without the skills and/or qualifications.

Domestic Interior Design is a difficult business as so much of it is about building a customer base and word of mouth. Once you have a good reputation, you can go far, but getting there can be a very long journey.

If you really, really want this, then be prepared for some very hard (but rewarding) work.

Good luck

Slim.

Additional :

Domestic - You are employed for your creative ideas, but then have to adapt/amend/concede to the ideas of the client, however good/bad there taste is.

With both, budgets are relative, but you can get to do some cool stuff if you're lucky.

I could personally never do domestic, as I could never stand in front of somebody and tell them that there ideas are OK when I really think they stink (don't mind doing it with commercial as it's rarely personal)

Slim.

I realize i need to save money first of all. But once I get the money and a place to go, is it possible to find a job before moving? Will a company help with relocation? Anyone else been in the same spot? I'm stuck in a city that has virtually no demand for a degree in design. I need experience before I can freelance and make it. What's the best way to go about relocating?

You don't need money. Just do it. I get ads looking for designers all the time. East coast - west coast - all over. Do it.
Reply:save some money go on the Internet and look in area you would like to live and start hunting send in your info some companies will flight you out for a interview. it will pay for hotel if you stay over night and yes will pay if you are hired some relocation but don't look for big bucks

One of my friends is graduating with a bachelors in GD and she is having trouble finding a job with a nice amount of money that is close to home.. We live in suburbs of a bigger city, but not huge... I think her problem is that she won't move away and that her degree is not good enough. You should go for the certificate, it will help in the long run. It will let prospective employers see that you have drive and determination in the field. Also, after you get your degree, send your resume to as many places as possible in a bigger city like NYC, LA, Chicago...etc. It will help, but you do have to start small. Maybe gain experience with an internship while you take classes to get your certificate. Good luck!!!

How hard is it to get a job in the Graphic Design field?

I'm currently majoring in the field of Graphic Design, I love it, and I'm finishing out my first year, so far it's been very easy and I've been on The Dean's List every semester (which is quite a surprise since in high school I was averaging C's and D's). I'm just wondering how hard it will be to find a job once I get out of college. I live in Ohio, if that'll better help with answering I'm not sure.

Also was this a safer career choice over Fashion Design or Interior Design, or does it fall into about the same risk zone?

How hard is it to get a job in the Graphic Design field?
Congratulations on your good grades in Graphic Design. It looks like you have found the field that's just right for you.

If you are completely dedicated to this field, then you will immerse yourself in it, and by the time you graduate, you will have the skills you need to get a good job in graphic design.

Once you are in the job market, you need to have a diverse portfolio to show what you can do. While you won't make a big salary at the entry level, if you have excellent creative skills, you can move up quickly. "Good money" comes about 3-4 years after you graduate, if you have the talent.

There are a number of cities in Ohio with very large markets for Graphic Design. Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, Dayton, Toledo, etc. have a large number of advertising agencies and graphic design firms. In addition, many good printers have their own design department. Work hard, give it all you have, and you won't have any trouble finding a job.

My opinion is that you made a very good decision in choosing Graphic Design over Fashion Design or Interior Design. Neither has the long-term job potential offered by Graphic Design.

Good luck.

How do I cut my grass to leave behind a checker-board design?

I saw this cool design on the infield grass at the Daytona 500 and would like to do the same to my yard.I have a 5 in.thick layer of St.augustine.Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

How do I cut my grass to leave behind a checker-board design?
It just takes double cutting... cut across one way, then cut back perpendicular to those cuts.

you can roll that way, too, but it's not great for St. Augustine.
Reply:You need to have a roller towed behind your lawn tractor. Go in one direction with roller down, go in opposite direction with roller up. If you have a walk-behind then person 1's option is more apt.
Reply:Here is what you want to do...you first go diagonal in one direction, leaving about 3 inch gaps in between the rows. Then go diagonal the other direction, and do not leave any gaps. you want to go slow, and put your blade on a very low setting.
Reply:Your lawnmower should have different settings on it. Cut lengthwise one way on your lawn with a lower setting. Then go across wise on a higher setting. This will give you the desired look of the checker board. Since you already have thick grass this should work very well. Good Luck!!!
Reply:I started to explain to you but its complicated. Where do you live I'll show you. LOL Try looking up landscaping (Grass) on the net. A map would be easier and I can't draw a picture. Corner to corner mowing than the same in the opposit direction. Try a patch first and you'll see what I am saying. Don't mow strip next to each other, also start in center and work your way out. Then do it again in opposit direction.

What type of school should I study interior design at?

When desiring a degree in an art based career is it better to go to an art school/career school or is going to a regular university sufficient enough? I want to study interior design, but art schools are sooooo expensive. So I'm wondering if it would be fine just going to a traditional university that offers interior design? Please help. Thank you.

What type of school should I study interior design at?
i am at a traditional school now and i am going transfer to a art school next year... i am going to the art institute of atlanta... most of the time you can get a alot of financial help from a art school, some of them will help you find a part time job to help you pay for school.... i think you should just apply to both a traditional school and a art school.. and see which one you can get the most financial help from... do you plan on filling out the fafsa papers? and are you a senior in high school?

Software to design your own clothes to later take to a seamstress?

I have a hard time finding anything in stores so I desided to design my own stuff and have it made. Any ideas on how to get started? Is there a software or a guide somewhare to help design clothes that'll fit you well that helps you choose the correct fabric? Where do you get your inspiration for original clothing?

Software to design your own clothes to later take to a seamstress?
I think you're taking a wrong approach on this. There is no easy software that I know of to help someone not in the business design and make their own clothes. The software is very specific to designers, and is not cheap at all. See:

http://www.lectra.com/en/fashion_apparel...

If you want to make your own clothes though, why don't you start by checking out some books. There are some books out there on how to make your own clothes. Some of them just show how to change your clothes to make them look a lot different, and can get more and more complex until you're making all your own clothes. The books also would teach you a lot of finding the correct fabric and getting inspiration for your designs. But just know that it's not as easy as you may think. It's difficult creating nice clothes, especially if you don't know anything to start with, so be patient and stick with it. Good Luck.

What would be a good design for a fire-safe home?

What is a good way to build a fire-proof home? And what do you think would be a good design to help firefighters tackle the fire easier and keep the fire from spreading?

What would be a good design for a fire-safe home?
Quite simply, the best thing you can do , no matter what type of construction you use, is to install a residential sprinkler system. Most residential fires are controlled by sprinkler systems prior to the FDs arrival.

Even if you build a home that won't burn, the contents will. A residential sprinkler system will complete a fire proof home.
Reply:A concrete home
Reply:In addition to concrete, they use a product called Gypcrete that is poured over wooden sub-flooring. It has a higher fire rating the thicker it is, and can be easily used in existing structures as well. As far as walls are concerned, steel studs with 5/8" thick sheetrock [or thicker by building up 2 or more layers], fire rated doors with automatic closers, and sprinkler systems are all things that are much cheaper in new construction vs. remodeling. Many or all of these are mandatory in multi family dwellings in the U.S.

Ultimately it because a useless piece of paper. The thing about graphic design and illustration is often it becomes who you know and not necessarily what you know. If you are going for an in-house job then being able to put a diploma on your resume will be helpful, but if you don't have the portfolio to show how good you are it won't mean a thing.

If you aren't too familiar with the software or only have an inkling I would suggest taking the course even if it's just to learn the principles of design and typography. It will also give you work to build up your portfolio when you are ready to go for a job.

It is a tough field to get into, especially if you want to do freelance work, but it can be gratifying and worth it if it is something you love to do.

Where can I find free design ideas for easy to maintian container gardens?

I'm looking to make an easy to maintain container garden using a large Roman-esque pot. I'm looking for some design ideas that include height in the center with a mound and edging flora. Plant choices that include color and/or fragrance would be excellent as well. This container will sit in a semi-shaded area on the front porch in Southern California.

Reply:Wow, because you live in So Cal, you have LOTS of choices. A shady location may limit the "fragrance" plants that will grow well. However, since I can't see exactly what your POT looks like, it is hard to say!

Here is what I would suggest: Take your pot to your local plant nursery and have them help you pick out some plants. You can always go to another nursery if you don't like the choices!!

Reply:I don't want to be unkind, but I think you require a plumber., there are strict regulations regarding soil stacks in view of health risks etc
Reply:You don't find designs for soil pipes. Just do a drawing of what you want, go to the plumbers merchant and show it to him and he will give you all you need. Don't forget, if you are connecting to a drain already fixed, you need to include a drain connector. You may also need to include rodding points in case of blockage. If you intend to run waste pipes into it, you will need straps with the correct size inserts for the waste pipes.

How do I become a High School Interior design teacher?

Ok, I have officially decided that i love everything about interior design, and want it to be my major. However, I have sparked a new found passion within the last year of my life, and have decided that I also want to do teaching at the secondary level. My only problem is discovering how to be a high school teacher who would teach interior design.

How do I become a High School Interior design teacher?
You'll have to major in Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) and tack on Secondary Education. You might not actually get the opportunity to teach interior design your very first year, but hang on to it and you'll get there. Good luck!
Reply:I think you will need to be certified in family and consumer sciences.
Reply:I don't know if there is such a thing as a HS interior design teacher. I've never heard of one and worked at one of the biggest school systems (Fairfax County Public Schools in VA). If there is, you definitely need to get a teaching degree. Best of luck!
Reply:You would need to complete a teaching degree.
Reply:First the bad news. There are not too many interior design teachers.

Next, the good news. You can do it.

You should take, if not already doing so, interior design courses in a college.

You will need education classes for the high school teaching part. Very often you will be able to pursue the both types of lasses at the same college.

Contact your state education department and find out the teaching requirements. They will inform you about the specific classes that you need as well as the total number of college credits and the other requirements.

Good luck.
Reply:Part of figuring out your class choices would be contacting your state office of education to see what requirements must be met to teach Int des at hi school. In my district, most of those teachers actually majored in home and consumer science or whatever a particular university calls those classes which were once simply known as home ec.

Different states may have different requirements, so see the people where you want to teach to get the low down.
Reply:talk to your guideance coulser and they tell you what to do
Reply:Where do they teach that? You are pursuing a dead license area.

How do Stencils work for painting walls? Should I just try freehand design for my home office?

I am not an artist, but I want to do something radical with my home office and use red and orange and yellow on the walls with some sort of design, not just stripes. Any ideas?

How do Stencils work for painting walls? Should I just try freehand design for my home office?
If you can get your hands on a projector, you can use any image you want w/o the stencil as you'll be able to trace the design projected onto the wall and make it whatever you want it to be.

If you choose to make your own stencil, get some painting masking tape, some good poster board %26amp; an exacto knife.

Draw your design on the posterboard or something equally sturdy and use the exacto to precisely cut out your design - tape it onto the wall and start your painting.

If using more than one stencil in the same area, wait until the wall has completely dried before taping up another stencil over it.

Since you are wanting to use different colors, make a stencil to use for each color. They will have to fit together like a puzzle when on the wall so you may want to use one piece of poster board as the main outline of the design. Cut that up and trace the parts onto separate boards and cut those out so they all measure the same %26amp; line up where you want them to.

Good luck!
Reply:totally depends on what you want..

and what you like as "radical"

You could do tribal, that would look "radical" haha.

it depends on what you decide,

if you can find a stencil that has a design you like, then obviously do that...

if you want something simple, and you can draw a line,

then attempt to do it yourself

What type of classes should you take if you are a 16 and interested in interior design?

I love designing things but i want to take it to the next level and actually take some type of class teaching you about design. Do they have that for people in high school?

What type of classes should you take if you are a 16 and interested in interior design?
Take Art (a must), graphic design (sometimes an ROTC course), %26amp; Home Economics.

If they offer Art History, Psychology, writing...take them.

These classes may not seem directly related but here's why:

Art History: Learn about color pairings, motifs, what has been considered attractive historically.

Psych: How the mind works, how to determine what people like, how they are affected by colors and concepts.

Writing: You may have to write a book about your design one day!

Good ID's know color, arrangement, individual tastes, themes and concepts, budgeting, sewing (!), crafts, shopping for home furnishings and accessories, etc.

Start practicing shopping for things you wouldn't buy, like furniture and home decor at malls, target, department stores, fabric stores %26amp; home depot. Learn about fabric names (corderoy, jacquard, toile, damask), woods (oak, maple, mahogany) and furniture styles (mission, federal). Learn about real estate and types of homes from the newspaper and magazines (craftsman, tudor, plantation) because homeowners often like to match their decor to the style of their home.

Buy some furniture from a thrift shop and learn how to refinish the wood and metal. Practice sewing curtains and pillows from scrap fabric.

Study Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese art of bringing good energy with proper placement of home furnishings.

Good luck!
Reply:Focus mostly in your art classes and take as many as you can this would give you a better understanding of shapes, colors etc.

Also try to enroll in computer classes, especially if they involve design as it is a great tool to be able to put together your designs and this will be of great help if you decide to continue as a interior designer in the future.

Good Luck

I am worried that my client may take the design and shop it to other agencies to get a lower bid.

I am designing a magazine as a contractor. How do I protect the intellectual property rights of the design?
With all my spec work, I put my watermark over the design itself. Also, keep meticulous records of when documents were created. You can also add the tagline on the bottom of all documents CCL - All Rights Reserved - your name - 2008.
Reply:Before you do anything for the public make a complete draft and mail it to yourself. be sure you include times and dates. even the time you were commisioned to do this project.
Reply:Patent your design. It is fairly inexpensive and the whole point of a patent is to protect intellectual property.

What is the purpose of the principles of design?

I need to know what the purpose of the principles of design are for my interior design class. Please help!!

What is the purpose of the principles of design?
was this exactly how the question was put to your class?

the principles of design are generally tried and tested ways of achieving consistant results in your work. only when you know and understand why each of these rules exist can you learn to bend the rules and form a style of your own. But you will eventually come to realise that even something you designed in your "signature style", only works because your style has come through an understanding of these principles.

So in short, you need to understand them, if you want other to understand your own work.

I would say to provide industry standards, to provide focus on what is important to other people that would use your designs. But hear it from the experts at the following sites:

What is the best way to measure/understand/design coil and inductance devices?

I was in a surplus shop with all kinds of inductors, coils, chokes, transformers, etc The variety of these devices is amazing.

How are these devices designed? How are they measured?

How do the turns/radius/core determine the inductance?

They are such basic devices, but I have never seen a standard multimeter capable of measuring it. Why?

Just curious how I would know how to measure and design them from scratch?

Thanks for any creative answers.

What is the best way to measure/understand/design coil and inductance devices?
Inductor come in a large variety of forms, depending on their inductance value, current ratings, and applications. They all consist of coils of wire basically, and these coils can be wound around air cores, iron cores, ferrite cores. Some inductors have cores that can be moved in and out of the coil to vary the inductance. RLC meters measure inductance with an AC signal; some mulimeters measure the current rise with time with a constant applied voltage. There are also impedance bridges which match the inductance to reference components. The basic unit of inductance is the Henry. A current rise of 1 ampere per second with an applied constant voltage of 1 volt represents an inductance of 1 Henry. One Henry is a very large inductance, with most inductors valued in the microhenry or millihenry range.

To design inductors there are formulas involving coil diameter, number of turns, and permeability of the core. For more information see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inductor
Reply:They make RLC meters that measure all 3 value at once. You could make an RL circuit and use a voltage input and output to determine the inductance value. Not totally sure how they are designed. You would have to look at the equations for them. I think you can buy a kit to make them.

I have not used inductors to much and I am an electrical engineering student. You can actually make a pseudo inductor using an op-amp.

I would not recommend graphic design degree unless you are passionate. 2-3 years is too long. Otherwise it is very easy to learn photoshop etc in your spare time with the millions upon millions of tutorials out there. The best way to show your talents is to play around with photoshop and create a website to showcase your work. use this as a reference in your resumes so employers can view the site. also use your graphic artistry to tamper with the look and feel with your resume. certificates are useless unless you have actual work to prove it with.

Can you design logos and trademarks, and copyright them for your future buisness plans?

I'm only 16, but becuase of a creative mind, I have like a million different business ideas. But since i'm too young for most of them, can i design logos for them, copyright them and reserve them for my future business plans? Also, can you design and sell logos to major companies that are just starting

up?

Can you design logos and trademarks, and copyright them for your future buisness plans?
You can't copyright logos and trademarks.

You can register trademarks, but only if they are being used in interstate commerce. In order to qualify, some companies will produce a few cases of some phony-baloney product, slap a trademark on it, and "sell" one case a year to a friendly company in another state. Registering a trademark is relatively cheap - hundreds of dollars.

You can get a design patent on your designs. This is relatively expensive - thousands of dollars.

When you get older, you'll realize that lots of people have a million ideas, and if they spend just 5 years per idea getting them off the ground, they'll die about 5 million years too soon. What's more, as you get older, you'll get more and more ideas, and realize that there are fatal flaws in most of your old ideas.

There's a well-established business tactic called the "trade secret" and that's really what you need to rely on. You don't invest thousands or even hundreds of dollars per idea - you simply buy a notebook. Inventors use a notebook with numbered pages, so that it's very clear that they haven't inserted something later, and they sign and date each page, and get someone trusted to sign and date each page as witness to their signatures.

In your case, though, you don't need a witness. You just need to get these ideas down so that you don't forget them. When you are old enough to bring some of these ideas to fruition, you will want to sit down with that book every three months, and walk your fingers through the book, page by page, to see what ideas have ripened into something that needs to be exploited.

As far as your second question goes, yes, you can design and sell logos to companies that are just starting up. If they are just starting up, they aren't yet major companies, though. There are a number of sites on the internet, for instance, that offer logo design for relatively few dollars. At 16, you could set up a site like that. If you sell one logo a week at $20 each, that'd be $1000/year, but more important, it would be lots of very valuable experience.

I think you should go with *that* idea immediately!

Reply:You are thinking of a graphic design position designing logos and of course you can sell them. They go for a lot of money. Creating a brand can be very involved.

Copyright is for works of art. I'm not entirely sure you could copyright unused logos. Usually, they are trademarked in a company's name.
Reply:Yes, you can copyright them but you would also want to register your trademarks and servicemarks with the State in which you plan to do business so no one else can use them.

Can anyone recommend an expert in various forklift designs and/or an expert in safety design of same?

I need someone who has knowledge and experience with the design of a swing forklift, truck lift and other types of forklifts. Person must also be familiar with safety details for the equipment. Thanks!

Can anyone recommend an expert in various forklift designs and/or an expert in safety design of same?
Check out the following link....

Raymond forklifts are a very popular unit in the narrow isle warehouse configuration used in the food industry.

The gentleman who started the company back in the 1920-30's also designed and built and patented the first "pallet" that we still use today.

What kind of business can I created with photography and graphic design?

I guess i'm not asking in the right forum for feedback but I was trying to come up with a combination of ideas that I like and create a buisness out of it. Photography of people, graphic design, and something to do with cultures of people and their backround heritage. I love culture and want to somehow use it for expression of others. Your input is greatly appreciated thank you.

Sounds like maybe you could make a book of them, or some kind of web page sounds up your alley.

How does one gain a voice in order to gain assistance with development of a design idea?

I have an idea which is based on solid principles, however due to the complex formulaes (that are interactive), and as it relates to vehicle design (very closed sector) which require the information with ratios of improvement over existing products, I am left with information which initial searches indcate has been overlooked. Indications suggest this should revolutionize design, yet I am left unsure on where to go to gain a fair go.

Present it to the companies involved if it doesn't give away your idea and broker a partnership.

What jobs can you do with graphic design education?

For health reasons, I need to find a job where I'm not sitting all day staring at a computer. I love the graphic design aspect of things but I am wondering if there's something else I can do with that training. I've looked into designing monuments, but that involves heavy lifting, which I can't do. I would love something that's more hands-on that uses technology/machines/equipment/tools and lets me move around a lot during the day. What do you think?

What jobs can you do with graphic design education?
I don't know, that seems like a very computer oriented field, but maybe in the area of designing like cars and stuff, some of it computer but also they make clay models and stuff, also like in a merican chopper you can design bikes and program computers to cut them, and maybe design the bikes themselves. i think probably design of any vehicle typed things. or possibly also like designer furniture.

What process has to undergo in order to make a web design company?

I am very talented with art and computers and make very good websites. I have decided that i should start earning money for my work (however i'm only 15). So how do i start in creating a web design business

What process has to undergo in order to make a web design company?
One of the minimum legal requirements for all businesses is that the company owner / creater is of legal adult age, which you are not, however you can legally contract your services out by freelance as a self employed minor, given that you do not need to have a separate legal entity (company) to work self employed. The first and most important thing to all business ventures is to establish an income, and keep cashflow coming in as greater in volume than the cashflow going out. If one of these fails, you end up in debt and can spend your life climbing out. In order to establish income, you must have people paying you, in exchange for goods or services, in your case web design. Web design clients can be aquired by advertising your services as available to the public, particularly targeting your audience, namely people who either do not have a web page, or have an old, pathetic web page. One way to advertise for free is to create a really good (your best ever) web page, and send a link in an email to organisation email addresses. This is called SPAM, and there are some laws against it, but it is so accepted in todays society that unless you SPAM the antiSPAM squad at the police department, with your name, address and phone number on the email, your probably going to be ok. you can also buy bulk (1000s) of current email addys for $10 on the net, but I suggest you use PayPal or something.

Remember, the less of your income you spend on yourself, the more you can spend on increasing the amount you make in any given period, so be smart about where you apply your capital, and you could be the next Bill Gates in 20 years easy.
Reply:Doesn't matter the age you are..You've got 12 and 13 year old kids online with their own web design business..

If you are doing business online the person has no idea of who you are..If they do..They'll be surprised to know that you are 15 years old. They only thing they want to know is can you acutally deliver what you say you can and if the prices are good. Web design on line is very competivtive. Especially compared to the guys over in India..

What you can do..is design a website with your work, services and prices listed on it if you like. When a potential clients visits..that's interested. Have them to fill out a quote request form. Make sure you have that on your website. This should allow them to include information about what type of site they want, how many products they wanted listed on their site, etc. You get the point. This will help you know how much to charge them.

The challenge is..getting visitors to your site. You'll need to advertise on line. By using google, overture which are the main two search engines.. Which are used by using certain keywords to get visitors to your site. Please know just because you have a site up doesn't mean traffic will come. You'll need to advertise.

If you don't have the money for that or your parents aren't willing to help you out getting started. Think of creative ways to generate business around your area. Pass out some fliers or post card with some of your sample work on it. If you are good as you say you are, there will be businesses that doesn't mind paying you for the work.

I say..if you have a cell phone..use it for your business.

Be sure to get mom and dad to help you out with setting up a business account..Think of a business name, get a business license, and perhaps a paypal account for those that chose to pay by paypal. Being young by having a paypal account you won't need to get a merchant account which allows you to accept credit card payments from clients..The paypal account will be good enough for you.

There's also a few websites that you can listed you services on there. It's very competitive with other designers.

How much can i charge for graphic design work ?

Hi, Im an aspiring graphic designer and am starting out freelance. Im just looking for suggestions on how much to charge for my services ? Ive been offered a few logo design for companies in my area and also a regular job designing a small local magazine. I have a few ideas about prices but i just wanted to ask for some good advice first ! Thanks

How much can i charge for graphic design work ?
Though it is good to see what other designers are charging, most them have experience and are able to charge a lot more. In the beginning, I think it is a good idea to price very low to get the job and at the same time - your client will know that they are saving money because of your lack of experience. It is a win-win because you get the experience and they get a great deal on something they need. Then with each job, slowly raise your fees until you start to see resistence from clients. Just remember, the more experience you have the more you can charge.
Reply:I don't think anyone but a graphic designer in your area can answer that question for you because you have to price yourself according to these 3 factors.

1. Your Experience.

2. Your cost to make the designs (Computer, software, workspace etc.)

3. The demand for Design in your area. If demand for design is high and supply is low then you can charge more. If supply is high (lots of non employed designers) and demand is low, then you can't charge as much.

I would look to see what other designers are charging in your area for the same level of work you're doing and charge a little less for it. (As long as it isn't below you're cost of operation) If no one is bitting lower your price, if you get too many projects raise your price.

I'm trying to design a house, any ideas on where to start?

I've a couple of years until I'll start building, but its always fun to design. Any good online progams would help, or good ideas for a house in the North East

I'm trying to design a house, any ideas on where to start?
Don't waste your time if you are unfamiliar with the building code, especially if you are hand-drafting. But here's my answer:

1. site plan (make sure your house fits on the land selected; stay away from rights of way and setbacks)

2. foundation page (includes plumbing drops and footers)

3. floor plan (includes door swings, cabinet locations, types of flooring, plumbing locations, air handler and condenser locations, attic access locations, etc.)

4. exterior elevations (all sides)

5. roof plan

6. truss plan (you can also hire a prefab truss company to do this as long as your engineer signs off on it)

7. interior elevations and details (for fancy interior features such as fireplaces or niches)

8. electrical plan (includes low voltage too - that is cable, phone, security, etc)

9. structural notes (you can get these from your engineer that signs off on the structural soundness of your plan. They typically have 3-4 pages of standard structural notes).

Computer programs are costly and require training to properly use (i.e. CAD). I've got experience in residential construction and I hand-drafted mine by working at night and weekends. It took me about five months to draw it out. I didn't do the site plan, truss plan or structural notes myself.
Reply:Go to Home depot there is an array of magazines of house plans which you can choose and order ready made plans or get ideas , good place to start...
Reply:There is an inexpensive design program called punch. Get it at your local building center.

What is the relation between origami and design buildings?

I am an architect and I like very much to make origami .

And you know there are many geometrical formulas in making an origami.

What I want to know is if I can use origami forms in design a building.

what is the relation between origami and design buildings?

would you please help me?

Thanks alot.
